Central banks kept buying gold through the summer, with August adding a net 39 tonnes and lifting 2026 purchases to 170 tonnes so far.
Poland led the year-to-date table, adding 8 tonnes in August for 98 tonnes this year and holdings of 648 tonnes — a 700-tonne target now in sight. China extended its buying streak to a 22nd consecutive month with 20 tonnes, while Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Czechia all added to reserves.
On the other side, Turkey bought 3 tonnes in August after three straight months of sales, while Russia sold 6 tonnes. The Dutch central bank also announced it is transferring 86 tonnes of its gold from New York and Ottawa to London to improve the liquidity and tradability of its reserves.
The figures come from the World Gold Council’s central bank gold statistics for August.
