Hong Kong's financial services chief Christopher Hui told the Global Precious Metals Conference in Sorrento that the city's gold central clearing and settlement system trial is earning positive industry feedback, with 11 banks serving as provisional direct participants.
The formal launch is scheduled for the first quarter of 2027, with the system being connected to Hong Kong's real-time settlement network to enable delivery-versus-payment — cutting settlement risk and operational friction.
The government is also weighing tax concessions to expand private storage and refining capacity, and the LBMA will co-host its Asia Forum in Hong Kong next April, by which point the clearing system should be fully operational.
