Ghana — Africa's top gold producer — is formally seeking BRICS membership. President Mahama's cabinet approved the application this week, and Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the bid during a visit by India's foreign minister, asking New Delhi to back it.
Ablakwa framed the move as widening Ghana's economic and diplomatic options within the Global South, not a break from traditional partners. If admitted, Ghana would join South Africa, Egypt and Ethiopia as African members of the expanding bloc.
